Polyacrylamide is primarily classified based on its ionic characteristics, molecular weight, and application fields. In terms of ionic nature, it can be categorized into non-ionic, anionic, cationic, and amphoteric polyacrylamide.

Non-ionic polyacrylamide carries no charge and is suitable for neutral or weakly acidic environments; it is commonly used as a thickener and binder in industries such as textiles and papermaking.

Anionic polyacrylamide carries a negative charge and typically has a high molecular weight, making it highly effective in wastewater treatment by bridging and flocculating positively charged suspended particles.

Cationic polyacrylamide carries a positive charge and is particularly well-suited for treating organic-laden wastewater, such as municipal sewage and sludge dewatering.

Amphoteric polyacrylamide possesses both positive and negative charges, offering a broad pH tolerance and making it applicable to complex water conditions.

Differences in molecular weight also directly affect its performance. Low-molecular-weight polyacrylamide is primarily used as a dispersant or viscosity modifier, while medium- to high-molecular-weight products are better suited for flocculation and sedimentation. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyacrylamide can even serve as a mobility control agent (or "flooding agent") in enhanced oil recovery processes, improving crude oil extraction efficiency.

Additionally, polyacrylamide can also be classified by physical form into solid, emulsion, and solution types. Solid products are convenient for transportation and storage but require dissolution before use; emulsion forms offer good stability and are suitable for ready-to-use applications; solution-type products can be dosed directly, offering simple and convenient operation.

In the future, with increasingly stringent environmental regulations and advancing technology, the application of polyacrylamide will become more refined and specialized.
