During petroleum extraction, it is primarily generated from the separation of water-bearing crude oil, backwashing of water-injection wells, cleaning of storage tanks, backwashing of pressure filters at wastewater treatment facilities, condensation processes, and various operational activities such as drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

This wastewater contains crude oil, soluble gases, solid suspended solids, electrolytes, bacteria, and various oilfield chemical additives. It is characterized by high salinity (mineralization), high oil content, abundant microorganisms, and elevated levels of suspended solids.
